Strength-duration curves for ventricular defibrillation in dogs.

چکیده
The threshold voltage and current necessary for ventricular defibrillation was measured in dogs using capacitor-discharge and half-sinusoidal pulses of current of various durations. From these quantities the electrical strength required for defibrillation was determined and expressed as energy, peak current, and charge per gram of heart. The optimum current duration depends on the criterion selected. It was found that with half-sinusoidal current, less energy, current, and charge were required; this type of waveform approximates that delivered by capacitor-inductor defibrillators. For minimum energy with this waveform, the optimum duration range is 1.25 to 8.3 msec and the energy required is approximately 7 mw-sec per gram of heart. For minimum current, the optimum duration is 8.3 msec; with this duration the peak half-sinusoidal current is about 30 mamp per gram of heart. There is no clearly defined duration for minimum charge for capacitor-discharge or half-sinusoidal current. ADDITIONAL

Comparison of the defibrillation threshold and the upper limit of ventricular vulnerability.
To examine the relationship between the defibrillation threshold and the strength of shocks that induce ventricular fibrillation during the vulnerable period, we determined the defibrillation threshold in 22 open-chest dogs using epicardial defibrillation electrodes with the cathode at the ventricular apex and the anode at the right atrium. We also determined whether there was an upper limit of...
متن کاملVulnerability of the dog ventricle and effects of defibrillation.
Vulnerability to ventricular fibrillation has been studied in 20 dogs by means of test stimuli of known strength and duration in order to ascertain the relationship between the vulnerable period and the recovery of excitability and to determine the effects of countershock defibrillation. The relative refractory period is found to be the only portion of the cycle during which fibrillation could ...
متن کاملImproved defibrillation thresholds with large contoured epicardial electrodes and biphasic waveforms.
A reduction in the shock strength required for defibrillation would allow use of a smaller automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator and would reduce the possibility of myocardial damage by the shock. Most internal defibrillation electrodes require 5 to 25 J for successful defibrillation in human beings and in dogs. In an attempt to lower the shock strength needed for defibrillation, we ...
متن کاملTransthoracic Ventricular Defibrillation with Triangular and Trapezoidal Waveforms
From 7,200 fibrillation-defibrillation episodes in anesthetized dogs, the effectiveness of 6 classes of unidirectional shocks in reversing ventricular fibrillation of 30-sec duration was determined. The shocks lasted for 1 to 256 msec. Three waveforms (ascending ramp triangular, descending ramp triangular, and trapezoidal) were studied at peak currents of 10 amp and 20 amp. Families of curves o...
متن کاملElevation of ventricular defibrillation threshold in dogs by antiarrhythmic drugs.
Effects of antiarrhythmic drugs upon the threshold delivered energy (TDE) and threshold peak current (TPC) for electrical ventricular defibrillation by damped sinusoidal shocks were investigated in 25 pentobarbital-anesthetized dogs. TDE and TPC were increased by the three antiarrhytmic drugs tested. Bolus injections produced a transient rise and continuous infusions produced a steady rise in d...
